Shamrock Rovers will become the latest victims of Armenia's dominance in European football unless they can stage a remarkable comeback in the second leg of their Champions League tie against Ararat-Armenia. The Hoops are trailing by two goals from the first leg and will be without star striker John McGovern, who sustained a groin injury in their 4-1 FAI Cup victory over Cork City 10 days ago.
The visitors possess a diverse team, including four players who have been part of Armenia's senior squad, which has a recent history of back-to-back competitive victories over Ireland. Brazilian journeyman Sandro Lima and Guinean Zidane Banjaqui scored their second-half goals in the first leg, which disappointed manager Stephen Bradley.
"We're disappointed in how we lost because we were in control of the game," Bradley said. "Large parts of the game were good by us, but we know we can be better. The positive thing is it's half-time, and we have a second chance at it at home. This is a difficult proposition, but I genuinely believe that we can go out, win the game, and progress to the next round."
Shamrock Rovers must now confront their mission without McGovern, who is set to miss the match. The groin injury he sustained has not sufficiently healed to be ready. Arsenal-bound midfielder Victor Ozhianvuna also missed out through injury.
The Hoops' Champions League journey has been a remarkable one, with their 4-1 victory over Floriana guaranteeing them three additional ties within UEFA's competition structure. They already know that one of Egnatia (Albania) or Celje (Slovenia) await them in the next stage of that journey, only unaware whether it's in the Champions League or Europa League.
Prize-money of €1.7m has already been grossed from their run to date, and would mushroom if they repeat their comeback heroics a fortnight on from becoming the first League of Ireland club to do so in European competition. Sligo Rovers have accepted a bid for their captain, Will Fitzgerald, believed to be €75,000, a record upfront sum paid by the Hoops within the domestic market.
