Shamrock Rovers' Premier Division title hopes suffered a major setback with a 2-0 defeat away to Galway United on Friday night. The loss at Eamonn Deacy Park, their first to Galway in a top-flight fixture since September 2000, cuts their lead at the summit to just three points.
Jimmy Keohane smashed the hosts into a shock lead inside two minutes, scoring his seventh goal of the season. Aaron Bolger doubled the advantage just before half-time, volleying home from the edge of the box to leave Stephen Bradley's side with a mountain to climb. Despite dominating possession and creating several chances after the break, Rovers could not find a way past goalkeeper Hugo Da Cunha.
Team news and key moments
Stephen Bradley was forced into a late change when Jack Byrne picked up an injury in the warm-up, with John O'Sullivan coming into midfield. The Hoops were also without the suspended duo of Michael Noonan and Naj Razi following the fiery finish to Monday's win over Bohemians. Galway, with Keohane making his 75th appearance for the club, were clinical from the start.
O'Sullivan had a goal-bound shot blocked on the line and Jonathan Afolabi was denied from close range after coming on at half-time, but the visitors' finishing lacked its usual sharpness. "Shamrock Rovers’ title hopes took an unexpected turn as they were defeated 2-0 away to Galway United at Eamonn Deacy Park," said Paul Madden.
Title race implications
The result halts Rovers' momentum at a critical stage. They remain top of the Premier Division with 65 points from 34 games, but Bohemians' win over Waterford means the gap is now only three points. St Patrick's Athletic, who have a game in hand, are also just three points behind. With two matches remaining, the margin for error has vanished.
Bradley's men must now regroup quickly ahead of their next fixture, a home game against Sligo Rovers on Friday, 23 October. They beat Sligo 2-1 in their last meeting in July and will view the match at Tallaght Stadium as a must-win to steady their title charge.
The defeat marks a first league loss in six games for the champions, whose recent form now reads three wins and two losses from their last five outings. They will need to rediscover their scoring touch, having netted 54 times this season, to see off the renewed challenge from their Dublin rivals.
