Shamrock Rovers are close to finalising a deal for Bohemians goalkeeper Kacper Chorążka. The Polish stopper is expected to join the champions on a free transfer to provide cover for first-choice Ed McGinty.
The move comes after teenage goalkeeper Alex Noonan left for Ipswich Town in a €450,000 deal. The club has been seeking a reliable backup since his departure. Chorążka, who lost his starting spot at Bohemians last season, is set to take that role ahead of current squad member Lee Steacy.
Stephen Bradley's side secured their sixth league title in seven years last week. That achievement was confirmed after Bohemians, Chorążka's former club and the closest challengers, lost at home to Shelbourne. Rovers then underlined their dominance with a 4-0 win over Sligo Rovers, a result that leaves them six points clear at the top of the Premier Division with 68 points. The team sits first with a record of 20 wins, eight draws and seven losses from 35 games, having scored 58 goals and conceded 35. Their recent form shows four wins and one loss from their last five matches, a sequence that includes a 2-0 defeat to Galway United on Saturday 16 October and a 2-1 victory over Bohemians on Monday 12 October.
The squad already features several former Bohemians players, including captain Pico Lopes and midfielders Dylan Watts and Danny Mandroiu. Adding Chorążka continues that trend. His final game for Bohs came before he was replaced by Paul Walters, who kept the jersey for the rest of the campaign. In that 4-0 win over Sligo Rovers on Friday 23 October, the goals came from Adam Brennan with a brace, Aaron Greene, and Dylan Watts.
With the 2024 League of Ireland season concluding this Friday, Rovers' focus is on strengthening for the future. Bradley's men will look to maintain their strong recent form, which includes four wins from their last five matches. Their final fixture of the campaign is away to seventh-placed Dundalk on Friday 30 October. The team's top scorer this season is R. Gaffney with nine goals in 27 appearances.
