Shamrock Rovers midfielder Josh O'Dwyer has been promoted to the Ireland squad for the friendly against Canada. The 16-year-old will join the team as a training player, along with Hibernian striker Owen Elding, who is still awaiting his Irish passport. O'Dwyer has been handed the number 25 jersey for the Montreal clash and is one of four Hoops players in the 23-man squad, along with goalkeeper Ed McGinty, and Michael Healy and Adam Brennan. He won't be with Rovers for much longer, as he has agreed to move to Red Bull Salzburg this summer for an undisclosed fee. O'Dwyer joined the Tallaght Stadium club from Leicester Celtic at the age of 10 and moved through the academy system up to the Under-20s. He has played for Ireland from Under-15 to Under-17 levels and was part of the side that qualified for this year's Under-17 World Cup. O'Dwyer opted for Red Bull Salzburg after attracting a lot of interest from across the UK and Europe. Brexit rules mean he cannot join a British club until he turns 18 in March 2028, so rather than wait until then he has decided on a move to the Austrian giants. He will initially line out for Salzburg's second string side in the second tier.
