Shamrock Rovers thrash Floriana 5-1 in Champions League thriller

Shamrock Rovers hammered Floriana 5-1 on Tuesday to reach the UEFA Conference League playoff with a commanding 6-3 aggregate win. Pico Lopes made a heroic return as Stephen Bradley’s side set up a clash with Ararat in Armenia.

League leaders Shamrock Rovers sit 3 points clear of Derry City with 66 points from 36 games and a +23 goal difference after scoring 56 goals this season. Their recent form reads LWLLL, with their last result a 0-1 loss to Derry City on 31 January 2026.

Rovers attacked from the first whistle. Adam Brennan’s delicate touch exposed Floriana’s right flank, and Guilherme Cioletti had to be sharp to deny John McGovern early. Lee Grace rose above the defence to head Jack Byrne’s corner past Cioletti in the 7th minute. But Floriana equalised inside 13 minutes when Tomislav Gudelj fired home after a VAR check delayed play.

Graham Burke and Byrne kept the pressure on. Burke forced Cioletti into a stunning save before Byrne blazed a shot just wide. The deadlock broke in the 29th when Watts nodded in Brennan’s cross to make it 2-1. Byrne nearly doubled the lead before half-time, only for Cioletti to tip the ball out for another corner.

The floodgates opened after the break. McGovern levelled the tie on 48 minutes with a composed finish after clever link-up play between Burke and Dylan Watts. Byrne restored the lead on 61 minutes, curling a stunner past Cioletti. Pico Lopes, back from his World Cup exit with Argentina, marshalled the defence and stifled Floriana’s attackers. Byrne made it 5-1 in the 74th with a first-time finish that sealed the win.

Why it matters for Shamrock Rovers

The victory guarantees Rovers a Conference League playoff in August and a shot at the group stage for a third straight season. Stephen Bradley predicted this kind of consistency at the start of the 2020s, and his side delivered again.

Pico Lopes’ return was the headline. His last game had been the World Cup round of 32 loss to Argentina and Lionel Messi. Back in Tallaght, he bossed the defence and shut down Floriana’s midfield. Gastón Manuel Romano and Federico Varela barely touched the ball.

Jack Byrne and Graham Burke were the standout performers. Byrne’s gliding stride and pinpoint finishing made the difference, while Burke’s vision and composure unlocked Floriana’s defence. The pair combined for three of the five goals and bossed the midfield battle.

Rovers now face Armenian champions Ararat in the Conference League playoff. The tie is set for later this month in Yerevan. A win would send them into the group stage for a third consecutive season.

Bradley’s side will also push for the League of Ireland Premier title. They lead Derry City by three points with nine games left, though their recent LWLLL run shows they can’t afford slip-ups. Their next league clash is just days away, and the focus will shift back to domestic matters after the European high.
