Rory Gaffney announced his retirement from football at the age of 36, bringing an end to a distinguished career that saw him become a Shamrock Rovers legend. The striker confirmed his decision in a statement released through The 42.

Rory Gaffney scored 50 goals for Shamrock Rovers across all competitions, including a key brace in the FAI Cup final that secured the club's first double since 1987. His contributions were instrumental in Shamrock Rovers' dominance, helping them win five league titles during his tenure. In the 2022 season, he finished as the club's top goalscorer with 15 goals in all competitions and was named both SSE Airtricity League Player of the Year and PFAI Players' Player of the Year. He also earned a place in the PFAI Premier Division Team of the Year after scoring eight league goals in the season following 2020, which helped Shamrock Rovers reclaim the title.

Before joining Shamrock Rovers, Rory Gaffney began his League of Ireland career with Mervue United and had a spell with Limerick before moving to England. He played for Cambridge United, had loan spells at Bristol Rovers and Walsall, and featured for Salford City before returning to Ireland to sign with Shamrock Rovers in 2020. Over his time at the club, he made 143 appearances, scoring 37 league goals and eight European goals, the latter leaving him fifth in the all-time list of League of Ireland goalscorers in European competition.

Injury curtailed Rory Gaffney's 2024 campaign, during which he made only eight league appearances as Shamrock Rovers finished runners-up to Shelbourne. He returned to full fitness for the 2025 campaign, contributing to another league title win, his fifth with the club. That season also saw Shamrock Rovers return to the league phase of the UEFA Conference League. However, an Achilles procedure in Sweden during the off-season was disrupted by infection, preventing him from regaining match fitness for the 2026 season, in which he failed to make a single appearance.

As of 04 Sep 2026, Shamrock Rovers lead the Premier Division by five points with 55 points from 28 games (16W-7D-5L), claiming a goal difference of +19 from 46 scored and 27 conceded. Their recent form reads DDLDL over the last five matches, including a 3-3 draw with Derry City on 2026-08-30.
